Library Renovation Celebration

July 8, 2009

On April 17th, the library celebrated the donors who made the the library renovation project a reality!  We were blessed to have many friends join us for this celebration.  A sample of photographs taken during the event can be found below.  For the entire set, please visit our celebration photos on Flickr.

You can also view videos of the celebration.  The video requires Quicktime.

Where is your favorite place to study?

March 4, 2009

The construction sounds are fading.  The new furniture has arrived — although we are still re-arranging :).  It has been fun to watch students “discover” the new library.  I was sure that my favorite place would be the fireplace (and I do love the fireplace), but I really enjoy the view of the campus from the upper level south windows.

I invite you to share your favorite place to study or relax in the library!  More photos of the new seating areas are available on our Flickr page.

New Furniture Arrives!

February 4, 2009

During Interim break, the new furniture arrived!  It is absolutely beautiful and comfie!!!  Stop by and check out the new tables, chairs and soft seating!  Here are a few pictures…more are available on Flickr.

Video Tour of the Library Renovation by Brian Boyenga

December 12, 2008

As part of Brian Boyenga’s final project for Advanced Journalism, he authored a story about the library renovation and created a video to highlight the new features being enjoyed by Augie students.  Collin Taphorn, a senior library student worker and member of the Library Renovation Task Force, provided insight about the renovation process and the popularity of the final result.  If the video does not appear below, click on the download link to view.  It does require Quicktime.

We would love to know your favorite features of the newly renovated library, so please share your comments below.  If you haven’t had a chance, stop by and check it out!

First Snow and Last Carpet

November 20, 2008

While shifting books on the upper level, the staff was able to enjoy the first snow fall through the new southwest windows.

The last of the orange carpet has left the building!  While general work continues, all levels of the library are open to the public.  The south side of the main level was the last area to be finished and students have already found the new space!

The parking lot re-surfacing is complete and the new stripes have actually added a couple of spaces!

The end is in sight!

Hot rails and new views

October 21, 2008

Students are loving the study rooms.  The rooms begin filling up in the afternoon and have been full each and every evening!

For students who prefer the study carrels, the renovation has added “hot” chair rails.  This allows students to plug in their laptop and save their battery!

The renovation is currently focused on the upper level.  Workers are updating the restrooms and laying carpet on the southwest side.

The removal of the brick fire escape from the southwest corner of the library has created great study spaces on each of the floors.  The new view from the floor to ceiling windows is pretty amazing.  Perfect for watching the first snowfall :)

The flooring on the lower level will be completed during fall break as will the resurfacing of the library parking lot!  There is something new everyday, so be sure to stop by and look around!

Jumping sides…..

October 8, 2008

The staff continues to move books and furniture as newly renovated space becomes available.  This week, Kay and Jan have led a crew in shifting books on the upper level — from the west side to the east side.

Jan & Ana take a break from disassembling shelves.

Kay vacuums the books before they reach their new, semi-permanent home.

Once the books are moved, the construction crews will move in and work their magic.  This will allow for a seating area near the new “floor to ceiling” windows on the southwest corner.  The view is magnificent.

If the library renovation is a marathon, we are on a dead sprint to the end!  I can’t believe that it has been a month from our last posting.  We have had the joy of moving into our new space and sharing it with students, faculty and staff.   Their amazement of and appreciation for the renovation has provided the library staff with a boost of energy and enthusiasm.

There are changes happening everyday.  We are happy to report that the group study rooms on the north balcony are complete, furnished and functioning (they have been full every night this week!)

The other favorite space has been the north reading area.  It is beautiful!

Although there is still some work to do and furniture to be delivered, students love the feel and the view from this area.

Watch for more pictures and please stop by for a visit.  We love to give guided tours!!!

August 18, 2008

I may be a little biased, but I think we have an amazing team at the library! We have (in 3 short days) moved the Oversize, Curriculum, Juvenile and Media collections (and much of the shelving) to their new homes. Communication will be challenging this week as we move from our “summer home” to our new digs! The library remains closed this week so we can continue to move offices, collections and furniture. If you were on campus today, you may have felt the earth moving as crews began tearing down the southwest stair tower. Here are few pics from the last few days.

Oversize has a new home with re-allocated shelving.

We unloaded the juvenile shelving. The Henry Carlson crew helped us to move it to its new home. And the we started reloading the shelving!

New circulation desk. The front is refinished wood from the library’s staff lounge. It is a great focal point as you enter the main doors.

Crews have started to tear down the southwest stair tower. This will allow the windows to be expanded to allow for more natural light on each floor.

We’re moving!

August 14, 2008

We are beginning to move — in small steps. Our new reference and media shelving arrived this week.

The staff worked on moving existing shelving to its new home. Thanks to the maintenance crew for their assistance in assembling and leveling the shelving.

Construction crews continue to work at a fast pace so we try hard not to disrupt them. The limestone fireplace is complete and is waiting for the installation of the granite hearth. The granite was formerly located around the fireplace in the library’s staff lounge.

Time to start moving our first collection — oversize — to its new home. Check out Flickr for the most recent photo updates.
